Some emojis you see and use online and in text don’t mean what you think they mean, or at least not what they were originally intended to mean. Some misunderstandings, at least in the Western world, are cultural; after all, emoji originated in Japan. Furthermore, all languages evolve over time, and emoji are no exception. As a result, many of us simply don’t know the original meanings of commonly used emojis. Here are a few of the less obvious ones.

What most people think it means: There is no desk and no indication of information, so this doesn't look like a person at the information desk at first glance. In fact, most people call this the "hair flip" emoji because of the position of the girl's hand. It has become trendy to use this in a message when you want to be sassy or cheeky.

What it actually means: The girl is holding her hand in a way that expresses helpfulness, as if asking, “How can I help you?”, just like someone at an information desk would do.

What most people think it means: Most people think this suggests a cute "oops" expression. People often use this emoji to humorously express embarrassment or to emphasize that they made a funny mistake.
