Talon Esports Offlaner Ws became the world’s first Dota 2 player to reach the 15K MMR milestone. What could have been a feat of serious awe and appreciation has been somewhat tainted, however, as fans have begun to question its legitimacy in light of recent MMR inflation thanks to Double Down Tokens.
WHO IS THIS MAN?! 15 YEAR OLD MID PLAYER 14k MMR – NEW Rising Star – Road to TOP 1 MMR Rank Dota 2
The 19-year-old Malaysian player posted a screenshot of his Dota 2 profile on Facebook earlier today. 15,007 MMR—yes, the Southeast Asian offlaner has reached a milestone that would have been unthinkable a while ago. However, the Reddit thread announcing the same called into question Ws’ achievement, and more broadly, the game’s current MMR inflation in light of the easy availability of Double Down Tokens and lack of MMR resets.
"Didn't we just hit the first 14k MMR 2-3 months ago? This is insane," the thread's top comment reads, referring to Team Falcon Offlaner ATF who recently reached the previous milestone. Another player added: "Ws himself was under 12k 90-some days ago. Just shows how inflated MMR has become with all the double downs."
The community, however, is not stingy in appreciating Ws' incredible achievement. Their criticism is mostly aimed at Valve, and thankfully not at Ws individually.
