It’s that time of year, folks. Show after show gets us excited for what’s next in the world of video games. But with so many releases and reveals, there are always going to be some missteps. One of them was today when 2K accidentally leaked its upcoming game, Civilization 7.

Civilization VII World Premiere Trailer | Summer Game Festival 2024

The leak slipped through the cracks of the 2K Games website, which features panels from every video game the publisher has produced over its decades-long history. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the Civilization 7 panel and banner appeared alongside everything else, including links to a wishlist and a trailer that is not yet available to the general public. It's highly likely that 2K planned to republish the now-deleted panel after today's Summer Games Fest.

The leak was initially spotted by the watchful eye of a Reddit user. There’s barely any information about the title, other than the logo and its existence, though we’ll likely learn more later today. A few months ago, rumors circulated about the possible development of a new installment in the Civilization franchise, but no one would have guessed that a full trailer and announcement were on the way. The last game in the series, Civilization 6, released back in 2016. Depending on when a release date is set, we could see a decade-long gap between the two entries, much longer than the gap between 5 and 6.

Civilization is one of the longest-running franchises in video game history. It pioneered the 4X genre and revolutionized it with subsequent titles. It’s the source of so many beloved and well-known strategy game mechanics. Its quest for innovation hasn’t always been well-received, with Civilization 6 introducing some of the most controversial changes to the formula. It remains to be seen what 2K plans to do with Civilization 7, though there is hope for a return to pre-Civ 5 gameplay mechanics.
