5G is the latest wireless networking technology coming to phones, smartwatches, cars, and who knows what else. As you’ll see below, it’s been making its way around the world over the past few years, but the journey is far from over. Some estimates predict that we’ll reach 1.9 billion 5G connections by the end of the year, a number that’s expected to grow to nearly 6 billion by 2027.
5G in 2022 VS 2023 worldwide
North Americans have been seeing sporadic 5G networks pop up for a few years now, limited in scope largely due to the fundamental challenges of 5G networks. Some estimates say that up to 32 percent of North American mobile connections will be on a 5G network by the end of the year.
Fixed wireless 5G broadband internet from Verizon and other providers is currently available. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, along with several smaller companies, also offer mobile 5G options.
Rogers Communications began rolling out 5G in early 2020, after investing more than $4 billion in 2019. The network currently covers more than 1,500 communities. Read more about Rogers’ plans for 5G to see when they expect to see a live network in different parts of the country.
