Napster is a legal online music service currently operating in several countries.
Napster looked very different when it first launched in 1999. The developers of the original Napster launched the service as a peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing network.
The software application was easy to use with a free account and was specifically designed for sharing digital music files (in MP3 format) over an Internet-connected network.
The service was enormously popular, providing millions of Internet users with easy access to a large amount of free audio files (mainly music), which they could also share with other Napster members.
