Soldiers of Super Earth are rallying for Helldivers 2, with the Escalation of Freedom update launching yesterday, helping the title surpass 60,000 concurrent players for the first time in over a month. The real question: how long will they keep up the good fight?

According to stats site SteamDB, the concurrent player count reached 62,819 prior to the release of Helldivers 2's Escalation of Freedom. By historical standards, it's a drop in the ocean for the Arrowhead Game Studios title, but considering Helldivers 2 didn't exceed 37,000 concurrent players for most of July, it has given developers and loyal fans hope that new content for the game will keep others interested for longer.
The last time Helldivers 2 broke the 60,000 mark was in mid-June, roughly a month after Sony decided to enforce the requirement for a PlayStation Network account to play the title, rendering the game unavailable in 177 countries. While Sony reversed its decision, Helldivers 2’s player base has been in freefall ever since, save for the June 13 release of Warbond and its gameplay update.
Only 12,000 players logged in during the game’s downtime last week, as they flocked to play new games like The First Descendant and Once Human. Many blamed Helldivers 2’s dull gameplay loop and persistent bugs and glitches, some of which have been fixed in the new update.
