The MacBook Pro may have been Apple's best chance yet to put a touchscreen on a Mac, and yet Apple didn't do it.
Why Touchscreen MacBooks Are a Bad Idea
Chromebooks, Surface laptops, Windows laptops — these days, it’s hard to find a laptop that doesn’t have a touchscreen unless it’s a Mac. Apple’s position on this is that if you want a touchscreen computer, buy an iPad, and that a Mac simply isn’t touch-enabled. But Apple also said that no one wanted to watch movies on an iPod, and that stylus input wasn’t great. Then we got the iPod Video and the Apple Pencil. But when it comes to touchscreen Macs, there are good reasons we’ll never see one.
"As a software engineer, I think the main reason the Mac doesn't have a touchscreen is that it makes it awkward to use," software engineer Michael Peres told Lifewire via email. "If it has a touchscreen, your hands are working against gravity most of the time. This can lead to muscle strains in your hands and arms, which can actually lead to a more serious problem."
The main argument against touch in a laptop is that it’s just uncomfortable to use. Touching the screen of a phone or handheld tablet is easy because it’s just there. But a laptop screen forces you to hold your entire arm up. It’s fine for a quick tap, but not for prolonged use. There’s even a name for the pain you get when you try: gorilla arm.
