How Quantum Computers Are Breaking the Internet… Starting Now
Researchers recently took a major step toward a future quantum version of the internet by connecting three quantum devices in a network. A quantum internet could enable highly secure communications, but experts say it won’t be unhackable.
“The quantum internet will allow users to transmit information more securely than ever before,” Marijus Briedis, CTO at cybersecurity firm NordVPN, told Lifewire in an email interview. “While data encrypted using quantum key distribution will be transmitted more securely and be harder for a malicious actor to intercept, we cannot say for sure that there will be no weaknesses.”
In the paper recently published on the preprint server Arxiv, physicist Ronald Hanson of Delft University of Technology and other members of his team connected three devices in such a way that any two devices in the network had entangled qubits.
