When you buy your first curling iron, it can be very confusing to know which barrel size to choose. Most of us can relate. However, you may also feel frustrated because you're not getting the tight curls or beachy waves you're aiming for, and the size of the curling iron may be the reason.

Which size curling iron suits you? Now you know it!

I used to make these mistakes myself and end up using a hair straightener instead of the newly purchased wand, but now I'm a celebrity hairstylist, and heat styling is something I'm very strong at. I'll list all the popular curling iron sizes for you so you can choose the best one for your hair type and curl goals.

When we talk about a curling iron size, we mean the diameter of the barrel which will therefore change into the diameter of the curls you are going to get. The smallest cylinder is only a third of an inch (or 9mm) and creates tight corkscrew curls; the largest barrel is 2 inches (or 55 mm) wide and creates a very loose wave on longer strands.

In addition to everything in between, there are also barrel sizes that go from small to large, i.e. one inch at one end to an inch and a half at the other end of the barrel and vice versa. Normally you'll find that variation in barrel size on a wand curling iron.
