Counter-Strike 2 recently received its first significant update since the Copenhagen Major, with the addition of cl_righthand 0 and the return of Dust 2 to the map pool. However, it seems that Valve is also quietly preparing for the return of Retakes: dataminers have uncovered numerous files about the missing mode, indicating that it is almost ready for launch.

Noted CS2 leaker ThourCS2 shared his findings on Saturday, April 27, claiming that many Retake-related files were added to the game with the latest update. Retake versions of all maps are clearly visible, as well as numerous lines of code. "The game mode configuration, map spawn files, and required UI stuff are already in the game," ThourCS2 wrote. He speculated that Valve may be in the process of rewriting the game mode code in TypeScript "like they recently did with Wingman, Armsrace, and Deathmatch."

Retake is one of several game modes previously present in CS:GO that are completely missing from the new edition of Valve’s flagship shooter. The company previously brought back Arms Race to the delight of many, though it still received criticism for only featuring two, albeit fully remade, maps. If Retake does return, it will be the second ex-CS:GO game mode to make a return, with several still missing, including the battle royale Danger Zone mode.

CS2’s recent major update also brought back the left-handed viewmodel, which functions similarly to CS:GO. The update changed Inferno’s design considerably, removing some of the tall buildings. Overpass was removed from the Active Duty map pool in favor of Dust 2, and there were many other smaller changes here and there to improve the overall feel of the game.
