AI can beat humans at chess, power vacuum cleaners, and now it can even compose songs.
How to Make Music with AI: Generate a Song from Lyrics
The winner of this year’s AI Song Contest, which used machine learning to create music, was recently announced. “Listen To Your Body Choir” was co-written with artificial intelligence and was inspired by the song “Daisy Bell,” the first song sung by a computer in 1961. But can a computer program really be creative?
“The short answer right now is ‘no,’ or at least ‘not yet,’” Chirag Shah, a professor at the University of Washington’s Information School, told Lifewire in an email interview. “While recent advances in deep learning have brought us closer to mimicking human intelligence, we are still a long way from achieving human creativity.”
For the song contest, teams of musicians, researchers and data scientists created a four-minute song, using AI as part of the writing process.
