Scientists say they have developed a way to predict car crashes using artificial intelligence (AI), according to a new research paper. The deep learning model produces crash risk maps with very high resolution. It is part of a growing movement to use AI to predict risk and help prevent accidents.
“AI technology inherently uses historical data to provide predictive insights,” computer scientist Sameer Maskey, CEO of FuseMachines, told Lifewire in an email interview. “Using artificial intelligence, it’s possible to assess and study historical and behavioral data surrounding everything from natural phenomena, like wildfires, to man-made situations, like car accidents and cyberattacks.”
In the film Minority Report, actor Tom Cruise played a detective who used "precogs" to catch glimpses of the future and prevent crimes. Similarly, the AI technology developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is intended to predict potential car accidents.
