Computers may soon be able to determine the choices you make online.
How AI Can Power Any Business | Andrew Ng | TED
Researchers recently discovered that artificial intelligence (AI) can find and exploit weaknesses in human decision-making and guide people toward certain decisions. Experts say the discovery is a sign of the growing influence of algorithms on human behavior.
“People who use digital platforms extensively online are at greater risk of being influenced than the average person because the AI algorithms behind the scenes, which are hungry for data, are learning more about their habits and behavior patterns,” Soheila Borhani, a physician and scientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago who was not involved in the study, told Lifewire in an email interview.
Scientists conducted three experiments in the recently published study in which participants played games against a computer. As the machine learned about the behavior of participants’ responses, it identified and targeted vulnerabilities in people’s decision-making to steer them toward certain actions or goals.
