A chance comment in an interview has led to crazy speculation about the future of AirPods, and it all makes perfect sense.
AirPods: How to Stop Automatically Switching to Other Devices
AirPods are fantastic little devices. They sound great, they integrate with all your devices, and they’re super easy to use. But imagine if they connected faster, sounded better, and removed that annoying lag when you’re gaming or using music-making apps. All of that could be possible, if and when Apple drops Bluetooth.
“Trust me, we need a replacement for Bluetooth,” says Apple nerd and podcaster John Siracusa on his Accidental Tech Podcast. “Bluetooth sucks. It’s gotten so much better over the years, but it’s really the number one thing that bugs me about wireless audio.”
In an interview with British magazine What Hi-Fi , Apple VP of acoustics Gary Geaves explained that his team would like more data bandwidth than Bluetooth can provide. He went on to suggest that something is already in the works. The most plausible “something” is Ultra-Wideband radio, which surpasses Bluetooth in every way and – crucially – has been built into every iPhone since the iPhone 11.
