Passive abilities determine your Pal’s stats and level path, helping you to best use and maximize your Pal’s potential. While some Passive Abilities are strictly focused on maximum damage or agile movement, others give you a balance of two stat variations, and Pals with these abilities can overcome a lack of manpower (or in this case, Palpower).
Friends with Traits -1, -2, and -3 aren't even worth bothering with, and it's best to leave them alone. The Passive Skill is meant to help your friend, not slow them down.
You won't have any trouble finding Pals with Tier+1 traits. They offer basic buffs, but a few of them will weaken your Pal's other stats, so use them wisely.
