Few video game franchises have a lore as deep and compelling as World of Warcraft. The universe in which the game is set has over 30 years of real-world history behind it, as the game’s developers, writers, and “loremasters” have continually added to and expanded upon the story-rich worlds of Azeroth and beyond.

One of the best ways to brush up on your WoW lore outside of actually playing the game and reading through its many quests and storylines is to read the official WoW novels. Blizzard has been publishing books set in the World of Warcraft universe since the early 2000s, and with over two dozen published works set in the world of Azeroth, it's easy to become immersed in the lore of WoW.

While many of the WoW novels can be skipped, as their contents are essentially just vignettes relevant only to what was happening in the game at the time, the order of the novels listed above will take you through the entire history of the game up to the present. If you want to delve into the history of WoW through books first, the order listed above is the easiest way to do so. The early novels cover major lore events leading up to the events of World of Warcraft, while the books published in more recent years are considered supplementary material to the ongoing story.
