Many might argue that in this age of the artificial intelligence assistant that watches over your shoulder 24/7 and listens to your conversations, our machines could do with being a little less intelligent. That’s where digital photo frames like the Aluratek 17.3” fit in with simple, useful and unobtrusive features, but ultimately it’s a little too simplified to justify the shocker of the price.

There’s not much to say about this digital frame in terms of visual style: it’s basically just a big tablet with thick black bezels. We did like that it’s designed to look more like a picture frame with raised bezels, but it doesn’t go far enough in this regard and ends up in an aesthetic no-man’s land.

This is a fairly thick unit, but not at all heavy, and is easy enough to hang on a wall in place of a traditional picture frame. It can be tricky to set down due to the unfortunate shortness of the power cord, and we struggled to find a suitable table to put it on where the cord would reach a power outlet. Even if you have good wall space with a handy power outlet, you’re stuck with the cord dangling underneath.
