According to a report in The New York Times, Amazon is set to launch its sci-fi shooter Crucible, the first major game the company has developed itself.
New MOBA-ESQUE Shooter for PC from Amazon? – Crucible
The big picture: The Times reports that Amazon has poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into its new development studio, called Relentless Studios, to compete with rivals like Microsoft, which owns Xbox One and has its own development studio, and Google, which is entering the streaming game market with Stadia.
Behind the Scenes: Gaming is a massive market, estimated to generate more than $150 billion in 2019, up nearly 10 percent from the previous year. Amazon will be better positioned to capture some of that cash with games it develops itself.
The details: The game, which could be ready as early as May (it's been delayed by coronavirus concerns), is planned as a "last man standing" shooter set in a world where dangerous players must occasionally work together to survive. Crucible will likely play well on Amazon-owned Twitch, where gamers can watch others take on big-budget gamers.
