Amazon has quietly added a new Request Invite button to its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X product pages in a new way of dealing with the surge in demand.

If you head to the product pages for the PS5 or Xbox Series X, you’ll see the invite button instead of an “Out of Stock” button where you’ll join the line to buy. An Amazon representative was able to clarify that this new invite-based ordering is meant to help people with products that are in high demand but not in high stock.

This new move is aimed squarely at scalpers. Llew Mason, Amazon's vice president of consumer engagement, says the invite button is aimed at customers who are "concerned about bad actors buying them and reselling them for a much higher price."

The way it works is that you first request an invite on the product page, and once you get it, you’ll get an email with instructions on how to purchase it. There’s no extra freebie, and you don’t have to be an Amazon Prime member; anyone can request an invite. As for when you can expect the invite, the Amazon representative says you’ll get the email once the consoles are back in stock.
