Amazon has finally updated its entry-level Kindle so that the device no longer looks like something that fell out of a cereal bag.

How to Use a Kindle (Complete Beginner's Guide)

Until this week, the base Kindle, the lowest and thus standard option in its e-reader lineup, had a pitifully low 167 PPI screen resolution and an ancient micro-USB charging/syncing port. MicroUSB, for those who don’t care to remember the names, is the most annoying of all USBs, and it usually takes at least three tries to get it inserted properly. The new model fixes those issues, but is neither cheap enough nor good enough to beat out the competition.

"I bought a Kindle Basic model last year and despite the low price, it's been an incredible experience; it has a built-in light so I can read at night," professional writer and Kindle user Millie Pham told Lifewire via email. "The Kobo has slightly better hardware, while Amazon has a better shopping experience and selection. However, the Kobo's e-ink screen is slightly larger and easier on the eyes than the Kindle."

The new Kindle has a 6-inch 300 PPI resolution display, which is the standard for e-readers, and comparable to the hi-resolution or retina displays on phones and tablets. In short, you can’t see the pixels. It’s like there’s ink printed on a page, albeit in this case a rather gray one. It also has USB-C charging, doubles the storage to 16GB (which you’ll never fill with books, but is fine for audiobooks). The price is $120, though you can get $20 off if you allow Amazon to show you ads.
