It’s taken longer than some had hoped, but Apple is rumored to be bringing an always-on display (AOD) to the iPhone, which could change the way people use the iPhone.
Enable Always-On Display on Any iPhone – iOS 16.1 or Later
Android phone makers like Samsung have been putting AODs on their phones for over a decade, but Apple has been waiting until it thought the time was right. That time, if the rumors are true, is now. Being able to see the iPhone’s clock at all times is cool, but with the upcoming release of iOS 16, there’s much more to it than that: combined, widgets and the AOD could be a game-changer for iPhone owners everywhere.
“I have my iPhone sitting on my desk a lot, and it’s really appealing to be able to glance at it and see what’s going on,” Apple-focused YouTuber Christopher Lawley told Lifewire via direct message. Not everyone wears an Apple Watch, and being able to see information at any time without having to fully reboot the iPhone is a bigger deal than it might initially seem.
Always-available information can be very useful. In the case of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (the standard iPhone 14s lack these), that will likely include day, date and app-based widgets. The unveiling of iOS 16 back in June gave us a glimpse of what to expect . When it ships this fall, it will enable all compatible iPhones to show new widgets on the lock screen, but the iPhone 14 Pro goes even further. Those same widgets are expected to be always-available, whether the display is lit or not.
