There's been a lot of talk lately about an Elden Ring movie, partly inspired by the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Why I Stopped Playing Elden Ring
But while Elden Ring as a game may seem difficult to translate from game to screen at first glance, it doesn’t have to be. There have been numerous films released in recent years that show how this can be achieved, and the truth is that an Elden Ring film adaptation wouldn’t really have to change much.
By now we’ve all seen the terrible game-to-film adaptations. I thought the Max Payne movie was a fever dream I must have had while I was terribly ill, but it turns out it’s real, and it’s “bad” in the way a swarm of locusts is bad, which is to say it’s biblically bad. But we’ve also had our fair share of truly fantastic adaptations, and while I may have had gripes with the Fallout TV series in the way it handled some of the older material, I couldn’t deny that there was clearly excellent direction, unparalleled prop and set design, and genuine charm.
And while I’m well aware that Fallout is vastly different from Elden Ring, it’s a great example of a game that translates well to an entirely different medium, despite the difficulties of adapting the source material. But what about something that does share some DNA with Elden Ring? Well, one such example is the brilliant 2021 David Lowery-directed “The Green Knight.”
