A new report from House Democrats recommending changes to anti-monopoly laws is unlikely to rein in the tech giants, experts say.
The 450-page report concluded that Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google are monopolies that must be reined in. It recommended a series of measures to control the companies, including separating lines of business. If the proposals can overcome political hurdles and pass, they could play a significant role in regulating big tech companies.
"The report shows that these companies have a monopoly position in the eyes of the House and they're using it to their advantage," Jeffrey S. Jacobovitz, an antitrust lawyer and partner at law firm Arnall Golden Gregory LLP, said in a telephone interview. "I don't think they're going to make any changes based on the House report. But it may make them more sensitive to the allegations that have been made."
Big tech companies are buying up competitors, prioritizing their own services and controlling smaller companies that use their services, the report found.
