A recent article in the Wall Street Journal criticized Apple for using iMessage to exert social pressure on users, particularly teenagers, to switch to the iPhone. But despite Google's willingness to work with Apple to solve the problem, industry experts don't expect the current situation to change anytime soon.

Android not receiving texts after switching from iPhone

The social stigma the WSJ article references stems from the fact that iMessage shows texts from Android users in a green bubble instead of the standard blue, making them stand out. Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google's Senior VP of Android, shared the article on Twitter, first lashing out at what he called Apple's iMessage lock-in strategy before calling on the iPhone maker to support the industry standard for messaging.

"We are not asking Apple to make iMessage available on Android. We are asking Apple to support the industry standard for Modern Messaging (RCS) in iMessage, just as they support the older SMS/MMS standards," Lockheimer wrote.

In practice, iMessage uses a proprietary protocol to send messages between iPhones. However, messages from Android phones are sent via the traditional SMS protocol. As a result, these messages are robbed of several useful features, such as the ability to send high-resolution multimedia, typing indications, delivery receipts, and more.
