Thanks to an update to Apple Maps, cycling in traffic becomes a lot less distracting.
Why I'm Switching to Apple Maps (from Google) for Bike Navigation
Cycling is a great way to get around and it’s fun. Stopping at the side of the road every few miles to check the map on your phone is no fun at all, which is why turn-by-turn directions specifically designed for cyclists are as much of a problem as sat nav was for motorists when it first came along. It’s easier and safer, but we need bigger changes.
“Being able to hear audio directions while riding your bike is much safer than following a map…” Kyle MacDonald, COO at fleet GPS provider Force by Mojio, told Lifewire via email. “While biking can be [great], it’s also a calculated risk given how little attention most [drivers] pay. The ability to have audio directions sent directly to your ears, so you don’t have to look down or pull over to find where you’re going, makes riding your bike a [slightly] safer option.”
Apple is a bit late to the game here. Turn-by-turn directions for cyclists have been around in Google Maps for a long time, and unlike Apple’s version, they’re available in far more places around the world. Then again, Apple Maps is the default maps app on the iPhone, so this brings great cycling directions to millions of people in all 50 US states, as well as a few cities around the world.
