In partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), Apple is opening its first American Developer Academy in the city of Detroit to provide resources and training to the local community.
Meet the first graduating class from Apple's developer academy in Detroit
Apple said the academy will offer classes in coding, product design, project management and more. It will also emphasize inclusivity, as part of the company's Racial Equity and Justice Initiative, which aims to address systemic racism and expand opportunities across the country.
The inaugural class consists of 100 students, ranging in age from 18 to 60. Each student will receive 10 months of training in app development and entrepreneurship, and enrollment is free. No previous programming experience is required, though students must be 18 or older.
The school's curriculum aims to give graduates a broad range of skills to find or create jobs in the smart device industry. Apple says its iOS economy supports more than 2.1 million jobs in the United States and continues to grow.
