After an illustrious 20-year history that saw MP3 players become popular and eventually eclipsed by smartphones, it appears that Apple is saying goodbye to the iPod.

In a somewhat vague (and saccharine) news release, Apple muses on the story of the original iPod through today's iPod Touch, suggesting that things are coming to an end. Or more specifically, Apple states that production of the iPod Touch has been discontinued and that what is currently in stock is all that's left.
“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did had an impact beyond just the music industry,” Apple’s senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, said in the announcement. “Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve built an incredible music experience into all of our products, from iPhone to Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and on Mac, iPad and Apple TV.”
The implication from Joswiak, and the news itself, is that the music experience offered by the iPod Touch is pretty much available on other, more widely used Apple products. All of today’s iPhones and iPads can play music from a variety of sources, have access to Apple Music, and can connect to AirPods. You can use the Apple Watch (paired with AirPods) for an even more portable music experience, or use your Mac or pick up a HomePod mini for more stationary purposes. With so many other popular options, some of them more affordable, there may be no need to hold on to the iPod right now.
