Apple has updated the GPU options for its Intel-based Mac Pro computers.
Looking Back at Apple's FAILED Mac Pro in 2024
Apple revealed the changes to the Mac Pro GPU lineup in early August, noting that users can purchase updated Mac Pro desktops with an option for AMD Radeon Pro W6800X, W6800X Duo, or W6900X graphics cards. According to Engadget, the graphics card changes are the only major changes coming to Apple's workstations with this update. This could be the last time Apple makes changes to the Intel-based Mac Pro lineup this year.
Apple claims that the new GPUs offer a 50 percent increase in performance per watt over the Vega II cards it previously offered in the workstations. This should result in faster and smoother apps using the new cards, according to Apple. Apple noted an 84 percent increase in performance in its Octane X rendering app and a 26 percent increase in how Cinema 4D performs on the updated workstations.
Each card includes four Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI 2 connector, and support for an Infinity Fabric Link, allowing up to four GPUs to communicate with each other at much faster speeds than possible through PCIe connectors alone. The W6800X and W6900X include 32GB of GDDR6 memory, while the W6800X Duo doubles that to 64GB.
