Apple is touting 3D video and immersive VR environments in its latest Vision Pro press release. But as we all know, the Vision Pro isn’t a VR headset. It’s the dawn of Spatial Computing. Right?
Apple Vision Pro Review – Why Does This EXIST?
The new announcement shows off Apple’s offering of 3D movies and other “entertainment experiences,” which look pretty good. But this PR angle runs counter to the rest of Apple’s messaging about its headset, which positions it as the next stage in the evolution of computing, the successor to the Mac and iPhone. So which is it? A radical reimagining of computing, or a $3,500 movie screen for one?
"Public reaction to the Apple Vision Pro headset will likely be a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism," software engineer Tom Andrew told Lifewire via email. "The headset's capabilities, including the mixed reality experience and the ability to seamlessly switch between virtual and augmented reality, can be seen as a step forward in the evolution of immersive technology. However, its high price of $3,500 may limit its appeal to a niche market of professionals and enthusiasts willing to invest in cutting-edge technology."
At its original launch event in June 2023, Apple kept hammering home the same tone: the Vision Pro is an entirely new kind of computing platform, one that runs apps in windows that float around you in your living room. You’re not closed off from your surroundings, and other people will even be able to see your virtual eyes blinking on a front screen, prolonging the illusion that you’re still present in the real world.
