Apple Music now uses Shazam to better identify DJ mixes.
Apple Music adds more DJ mixes with new features powered by Shazam
The tech giant will use Shazam's technology to identify the artists or labels behind the small clips and samples in DJ and dance mixes so they can be properly compensated and credited on the platform, TechCrunch reports. Apple is the first music streaming platform to offer fair compensation to artists involved in these mixes and tracks.
Shazam’s identification technology will benefit listeners, too. The Verge notes that Apple Music subscribers will be able to see the names of individual songs while listening to a mix, skip songs in the mix, and save songs to their library. The technology will also tell you what year the mix is from or what music festival it was played at.
While Apple's announcement addresses the royalty issues in the DJ/dance mix genre, it doesn't address user-generated content that's available to the public (think SoundCloud mixes). According to a study by MIDiA Research, user-generated content could be worth $6 billion in the music industry by next year.
