Not only did Apple unveil the new Apple Watch, it also introduced an entirely new spin-off designed specifically for more robust and intensive use.
We gave the Apple Ultra Watch to five professionals (diving, running, hiking, teardown)
The Apple Watch Ultra is Apple's answer to more "outdoor-y" style smartwatches, something Apple referred to as "…the most rugged and capable Apple Watch ever." At a base level, it uses a lightweight, aerospace-grade titanium case and a flat sapphire crystal on the front for added durability. And there are three new bands (Alpine, Ocean, and Trail) that are all built to withstand a variety of scenarios.
It also offers what Apple calls its largest, brightest display yet, with several new display customization options, including a more detailed compass. That compass has itself been redesigned for the Apple Watch Ultra, adding a way to set custom waypoints and even use GPS to find your way back if you get lost. And you can use the Apple Watch Ultra as a legitimate dive computer, thanks to EN13319 depth certification (to 130 feet) and a new Oceanic+ app to manage your dives.
Additionally, the Apple Watch Ultra has an even larger battery than other models, giving you up to 36 hours of use on a single charge. Apple also hinted that it could last up to 60 hours using a new (unnamed) battery optimization setting that will debut sometime later this fall.
