Apple's next iPhone might feature one of those fancy woven charging cables that come with MacBooks. And that's a good thing, because Apple's current cables are disgraceful pieces of junk.
Cheap charging cables will destroy your iPhone…
Given Apple’s reputation for quality hardware, from the absurdly well-built iPhone to the design and engineering that goes into its iPad cases, it seems odd that its cables are so bad. And I don’t think it’s because we use them more than other cables. The iPhone 15 is rumored to come with a braided USB-C cable, perhaps even in the same color as your iPhone. Will these cables be any better? Let’s hope so, because they can’t be much worse.
"The perception of Apple's stock iPhone Lightning cables as low-quality may stem from their apparent susceptibility to wear and tear compared to other aftermarket options. Many people find that the cables fray or split after extended use," software designer, electrical engineer and technology writer Matt Kerr told Lifewire via email.
Back to the iPods with hard drives: I’ve found that the cables Apple supplies split, fray, or, most alarmingly, split, fray, and also turn brown around the wound. These cables are encased in a plastic that hardens and cracks quickly, causing it to split around the USB-C and Lightning connectors.
