For years, Apple’s MacBook lineup has been downright confusing, but now there are finally some good reasons to choose the MacBook Pro over the Air, and vice versa.

Until the launch of the new 2021 MacBook Pro, Apple’s Pro laptop lineup had little to do with the Air, its entry-level model. If you wanted a small, light laptop with lots of power and long battery life, you bought the Air. If you wanted something that produced ambient noise with its howling fans but also drained the battery quickly, you bought a Pro. Now, the choices are clear, as we’ll see. But what about the odd 13-inch MacBook Pro? And will the next MacBook Air, due in March, close the gap or make the differences even more pronounced?
“For the average consumer, the biggest difference between Airs and Pros is the size and overall design. Airs are smaller, sleeker, and lighter than Pros, and while they may have a few less features, most users will only recognize the size/design differences,” Kristen Bolig, founder of SecurityNerd, told Lifewire via email.
Years ago, Apple’s Steve Jobs used a keynote presentation to lay out his lineup in a four-section grid. It showed pro and regular on one axis, desktop and laptop on the other. That structure has been stretched to breaking point in recent years, but it’s coming back.
