I've been listening to Apple's lossless music format for a few weeks now. The sound quality is better, but the difference is not noticeable.
Lossless DOESN'T MATTER! Apple Music $0 Update.
Apple recently announced that Apple Music subscribers would be able to listen to music with lossless audio. The new feature is available to Apple Music subscribers starting this month at no additional cost. At launch, 20 million songs will support lossless quality, and Apple says it will support all songs on Apple Music by the end of the year.
Some audio geeks lament the current state of audio formats where files are compressed to make them smaller. However, with the move to lossless, Apple is using ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) which allows it to create compact file sizes, reportedly without affecting the quality of the original audio recording.
The lowest Lossless tier starts at CD-quality, 16-bit at 44.1kHz and jumps to 24-bit at 48kHz. Serious audiophiles can also listen to music in Hi-Res Lossless, which is available at 24-bit 192kHz. However, Hi-Res Lossless requires a USB digital-to-analog converter, or DAC.
