Apple’s new lineup of iPhones may look similar to last year’s models, but they pack a lot of new features and improvements under the hood. These changes include new camera sensors with an improved image processing pipeline that offers significant improvements when capturing images in low light. Apple takes these improvements a step further with the help of Photonic Engine, a new way of processing your shots. Let’s take a look at how it can help you take better photos.
iPhone 14 vs 13/12/11/XS/X – Should You Upgrade?
Photonic Engine is Apple's new and improved image processing pipeline that improves low-light shots by applying Deep Fusion earlier than before.
Once you capture an image to a device, it goes through an image processing pipeline that converts the capture from your source (in this case, your camera) and optimizes it for your renderer, such as the display.
Apple's Deep Fusion technology was previously applied to your footage at a later stage in this pipeline, but with Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion is now applied much earlier in the process.
