While speculation about Helldivers 2 content often stems from little more than leaks and data mining, it’s rare to see Arrowhead Studios dropping so many hints. But when it comes to addressing greatsword bugs, these devs seem just as eager to do so as we are.
Helldivers 2 – Devs Explain Nerfs, Discuss Tank, Player Reactions, and More!
One member of the Arrowhead team, community manager Twinbeard, really likes the idea of melee. Responding to online speculation as early as late February, just two weeks after the release of Helldivers 2, Twinbeard replied to a Diver who was excited about what would be in the new game: "If you or I could look inside the minds of our developers, I'm sure we'd find dozens of ideas. More melee? Who knows?!"
On April 15, Twinbeard spoke about how the Bolters from the Warhammer series probably wouldn't be making it into the game, but that "Bolters or IRL equivalents in general" could be on the cards, and "Melee weapons" were "plausible!"
As you might expect from a community manager for such a crowd-driven game, Twinbeard has been quite vocal on the topic, posting no less than five times in response to Diver's speculation. For example, he made a relatively recent comment in the Galactic War chat stating, "Melee weapons could be plausible," but "Lightsabers from Star Wars are not." And another comment stating that he likes the "melee touch" of a bayonet-mounted weapon. As if that wasn't enough, on April 6, he posted "Melee is still branded plausible" in response to Diver's question about melee weapons and armor dying, with a winking face emoji. Other community managers on the Helldivers 2 Discord aren't as likely to tease as Twinbeard, but none have dismissed the idea.
