Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) missing in services fix
I wrote an article earlier about the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service not starting and how to fix it. If this service is not running in the background, you will not be able to download Windows updates. It also causes all sorts of other problems, but the biggest problem that most people experience is when they cannot download updates.
My previous article has helped me quite a few times over the past 5 years. It was only a few days ago that I ran into a problem with BITS that the article didn’t help with. In this case, one of my computers got a bad virus and while cleaning it, the BITS service simply disappeared from the list of services. Every command I tried to run to restart or re-register the service simply didn’t work.
Eventually I found out that I had to recreate the BITS service from scratch! At that point I could re-register it with Windows and then go to Services and start it from there. In this article I will walk you through the steps to manually create the BITS service and then register it with Windows.
