Depending on how far you are in the game, the best unit composition will change as you gain more units. To successfully reach the late game, you'll need great teams every step of the way, especially if you plan on playing on a harder difficulty.
In the beginning of the game you are limited to the units you have access to. When you are first able to change your team compositions you have access to Alain, Chloe, Hodrick, Josef, Lex, Clive, Travis and Aubin. Until you can unlock more units these are my favorite teams to make with the units you have.
