Elminster Aumar can be found at the entrance to the Shadow Cursed Lands in Act 2. If you can't find him there, he can also appear in front of the Moonrise Towers, on the Stone Bridge.
Once you encounter this wizard, he will either want to talk to Gale in secret or he will ask you for directions to your camp, if Gale has not accompanied you. Whatever the request, you can be sure that Elminster has no evil intentions and that you can trust him.
