Biomutant is ambitious and at times quite entertaining, but it mostly fails to live up to its ambitions. Ultimately, it is a mess of plot twists all tied together by a weak thread.
Biomutant is a weird and wonderful open world RPG! (review)
Biomutant is set years after the fall of humanity, in a time when mutated animals have taken over the lands and now inhabit the remains of humanity’s great cities. Players take on the role of a ronin, a lone samurai with no tribe or group of his own, who has returned to take revenge on the predator that murdered his family.
But the story doesn't stop there. There's also a tribal war to navigate and participate in, and a threat to the Tree of Life, a massive tree responsible for all life on the planet.
If it sounds confusing, it is. While the story is intriguing at first, it quickly devolves into a tangle of stories, many of which involve a karma-based decision-making system. These stories are punctuated by combat and open-world exploration, which is honestly where the game shines the most.
