“If you seek the truth, look in the dark,” says Saddam Hussein in the new live-action trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Featuring a host of real-life politicians and a slew of cryptic messages, the trailer is true Black Ops in all its glory.

Controversial figures from the world of politics, particularly those involved in conflicts around the world, are central to the theme of the trailer. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, former US Presidents George Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton, deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, and former US General and Secretary of State Colin Powell all make appearances (played by actors) with comments on the nature of war. This latest trailer continues in the same vein as previous promotional material for Black Ops 6, focusing on how the government lies to the public and wages war in the shadows.
“You wanted peace, so we hid the war,” Powell says in the trailer, which cuts to images of numerous conflicts from around the world. Fire also plays a central role in the footage, with Bush Sr. looking into a raging fireplace, Hussein holding a lighter, and so on. Fire symbolizes light, and the trailer was hinted at in an earlier teaser via Morse code with a quote: “On May 28th, we shine a light on their lies.”
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is, as the name suggests, the sixth installment in the long-running sub-franchise. It’s covered a lot of ground since the first game, but all the promotional material we’ve seen recently, including the trailer, suggests a return to form for Treyarch. The first and second games, particularly the former, focused on the intrigue and horrors of war, shown in an unfiltered manner.
