Eli Roth's latest film opened in 3,125 theaters on August 9, but only grossed $8.8 million in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Borderlands film grossed the most on its release day, with four million dollars worldwide, while the remaining two days grossed just over two million each.
With that in mind, Borderlands could quickly prove to be a financial disaster for Lionsgate Films. According to Variety , the film reportedly had a budget of $115 million, most of which likely went toward hiring the film's impressive cast list, which includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black. However, it turns out that a Hollywood cast isn't enough to make your money back.
The terrible financial results are likely no coincidence, given how terrible Borderlands has been in the press. Initially, critics called it a “visually appalling failure” – and the reviews that poured in over the weekend weren’t much better. At the time of writing, Roth’s production has a nine percent Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and an Audience Score of 50 percent.
