The summer box office is winding down as Amazon MGM's social thriller "Blink Twice" and Lionsgate's action film remake "The Crow" both look set to open among a trio of remaining films.

“Blink Twice,” however, is winning the race among new releases, having grossed $2.8 million as of Friday with preview screenings at 3,067 locations. It’s not exactly a huge splash for the Zoë Kravitz-directed thriller starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum, which follows a woman who visits a tech billionaire’s private island and uncovers a devious conspiracy. But the MGM production has a light production budget of $20 million — it’s off to a good enough start if it can maintain momentum. Reviews have been positive, though audience research firm Cinema Score gave it a B grade (standard middling for a horror film).

Meanwhile, “The Crow” will have a battle to crack the top five after earning $2 million on Friday from previews in 2,752 locations. The new R-rated adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel looks set to be Lionsgate’s second straight August flop, following the dismal performance of its video game adaptation “Borderlands.”

As with many of its releases, Lionsgate has protected itself financially here; the studio is only responsible for distribution costs after snapping up the U.S. rights for about $10 million. But with a production budget of $50 million, it's clear that "The Crow" hasn't lived up to expectations. Buzz hasn't been great for the Rupert Sanders-directed feature since its first trailer dropped, and some outright negative reviews — and a B Cinema Score — don't suggest that sentiment will completely change after opening weekend.
