Maybe someday your computer will run on brain cells.

This is the end of the silicon chip, this is what happens next

Researchers recently discovered that biological computers can save electricity compared to the silicon chips we use today. In the paper announcing the discovery, scientists described using 50,000 brain cells grown from stem cells. It’s part of a growing movement to harness the power of evolution to make computer processing faster.

"This is fueled by the impressive capabilities of a brain compared to a computer, such as efficiency, continuous learning, and intuitive decision-making," Thomas Hartung, a professor at Johns Hopkins University and one of the paper's lead authors, told Lifewire in an email interview. "The world's fastest supercomputer matched the estimated computing power of a single human brain last June, but that computer took up 68,000 square feet and cost $600 million."

In their paper, the research team described a method for creating “organoid intelligence,” or OI. The approach would use brain organoids grown in cell cultures, which share some of the same functions and structure as brains.
