Brother has addressed one of the most common complaints about home and small office printers with the MFC-J985DW by focusing on the most expensive part of printing: ink. Part of Brother's INKvestment series, the MFC-J985DW guzzles ink like a hybrid car, with ink efficiency that puts most of the competition to shame. It doubles down on that efficiency by offering inexpensive, high-capacity refills that deliver the best cost per page of any home inkjet printer we've ever tested.
We tested the MFC-J985DW extensively and found that the device generally works well, although it is more focused on text than images.
The MFC-J985DW is compact and functional, with a black, block-style frame that fits well into any office environment. The only interface on board is a 2.7-inch colour touchscreen on a narrow front panel that tilts easily up to 45 degrees for easy access from above, or can be laid flat for storage. The paper tray, which holds up to 100 sheets, slides out completely from the front and then opens.
