If anyone found Venice in 2023 particularly surreal, it was Caleb Landry Jones.

Not only had the actor been on the Lido for barely 24 hours — for the world premiere of Luc Besson’s “DogMan,” in which he played a transvestite vigilante thief with a pack of dogs at his disposal — but the 34-year-old had actually been dragged from a muddy mountaintop film set in Scotland early one morning, flown to Italy, dressed in a T-shirt, chauffeured from the press conference to the red carpet, flown back to Scotland the next day and driven to the top of a mountain to film a pivotal scene.

"I was in Venice, but all I was thinking about was this really important scene I had to do," he says. "And I kept falling asleep during the screening and trying to wake up and Luc would say, 'Man, it's OK, go to sleep,'"

During his time in Venice, Landry Jones also created an air of intrigue and mystery by speaking with a Scottish accent throughout. At the "DogMan" press conference, Besson said his star was "in character," and while he claims he never considered himself a method actor, after talking to others he's come to appreciate that he probably is one.
