California will ban the sale of all new gasoline-powered cars starting in 2035, setting the tone for the rest of the world.
California could become the first state to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars
California has a history of sweeping green laws that quickly became commonplace around the world. For example, 14 U.S. states have signed on to zero-emissions standards for cars rather than follow less stringent federal regulations. Now California has outlined its plan to ban gasoline-powered cars, which should lead to similar changes around the world.
“California’s sustainability leadership is the product of a number of factors coming together in a rather unique way,” Ryan Rickards, COO of electric vehicle advocate EVE, told Lifewire via email. “The state’s beautiful natural environment is part of its identity and economy, and it faces significant threats — in the form of droughts and wildfires — that are exacerbated by climate change. This has led to an even stronger public engagement from Californians. Finally, unlike most other U.S. states and countries around the world, many California-based companies are aligned with the state’s focus on environmental stewardship. After all, California is home to sustainability leaders like Patagonia, Apple, Google and — until recently — Tesla.”
Yes. From 2035, you will no longer be able to buy a new car that runs solely on petrol. You will still be able to buy and sell used models, but new cars will be off the menu, so to speak. Even the sale of plug-in hybrids will be restricted. They will still be allowed, but only up to 20% of all car sales.
