Why would a car amplifier turn itself off?
There are a few different reasons why an amplifier will turn itself off. It could go into “protect mode,” which is an automatic shutdown feature designed to prevent further damage to the amplifier. It is also possible that there is a problem with the wiring in the car amplifier, that it is getting too hot, or that it is even defective and needs to be replaced.
Protection mode is a rather complex subject, as there is a lot of variation from one car audio amplifier to another. Some amplifiers have LED lights that light up when protection mode is activated, others do not, and some even have multiple LED lights, each indicating a different type of fault. In any case, if your amplifier is installed in a place where it is difficult to see, the protection light may be on without you knowing it. So before doing anything else, you should locate your amplifier, do what is necessary to access it, and then check for a warning indicator. If it has a protection mode LED and the LED is on and stays on, then the amplifier is in protection mode.
If your amplifier goes into protection mode, either as soon as you turn it on or at some point afterward, there is a fairly complex diagnostic procedure that you will need to follow. The basic idea behind diagnosing an amplifier in protection mode is that the amplifier may have been installed incorrectly, it may have overheated, there may be a wiring issue, or you may have a problem with one or more of your speakers or subwoofers. For example, a grounded speaker can cause an amplifier to go into protection mode, which will then shut it down.
