The escalating conflict between cars and bicycles could use some technical help.

Audi is working with other companies to develop hardware and software that will allow vehicles to read their surroundings and identify bicycles nearby, including bicycles that are blocked from the driver’s view. It’s based on a standard called C-V2X, which uses cellular connectivity to send and receive signals from a vehicle to other vehicles, pedestrians or fixed objects such as traffic lights in the vicinity.
“The technology alerts cyclists and drivers of where they are on the road and of potential collisions based on sharing C-V2X data,” Audi spokesman Mark Dahncke told Lifewire in an email interview. “It’s the first step in providing driver and cyclist warnings to better navigate neighborhoods and roads.”
Audi is working on new safety technology that uses mobile technology to allow cars to communicate with their surroundings. In Northern Virginia, a C-V2X program informs vehicles approaching a construction zone, warns drivers of the speed limit in the work zone when entering a construction zone, and notifies road workers when cars are near a construction zone via a connected safety vest.
