CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the popular The Witcher series, has revealed plans for the next phase of the video game franchise, or sort of.
Witcher 4: CD Projekt Discusses Use of Unreal Engine 5 – Technical Overview
Okay, so it didn't exactly "reveal plans," but it did post a single teaser image on Twitter, along with an accompanying tweet with the brief announcement. The same announcement was posted on the official website, but some had trouble loading it, hence the second tweet.
The announcement explains that this next entry in the series will use Unreal Engine 5 instead of the company’s own REDengine, which was last used for Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, the announcement explains that the change is part of a multi-year partnership with Epic Games, the makers of Unreal Engine. The stated goal is for CDPR and Epic to work together to figure out how they can work with Unreal to produce more open-world experiences.
This engine change appears to only apply to the next Witcher title(s) and other future projects, and will not affect currently released games or their patches/downloadable content. CDPR made it clear that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion will continue to use the REDengine that the core game was developed for.
